reminder that getting married super young wasn’t the norm throughout history. the average age of newlyweds varied by culture & time period & class. different societies had different ideas of what was an appropriate age for marriage. the concept that everyone was getting married as teenagers or whatever is bc we base a lot of our historical impressions on european aristocrats–who are in fact NOT good role models for how most people lived (or good role models AT ALL).
don’t let people use “history” to pretend like teenagers getting married is ever normal and healthy. it happened but it wasn’t healthy and it never had to be normal. it was a sign of social dysfunction and should be remembered as such.
